2001 Golf GTI 1.8T with rusEFI Proteus: a more accessible path to log review and tune improvement

In this founder-owned setup, a 2001 Golf GTI 1.8T had its original ECU fully replaced with a rusEFI Proteus and a new wiring harness. The challenge was not only outdated hardware: the software workflow was also expensive, confusing, and unfriendly to someone tuning as a hobby. With Forge Manager, the goal became to try the product earlier, access more features, and use AI-assisted analysis to get clearer direction on what to improve in the tune.

Setup

  • Volkswagen Golf GTI 2001 1.8T
  • rusEFI Proteus
  • New wiring harness with full replacement of the original ECU
  • Brazilian fuel context with E27 gasoline, where the original ECU no longer fits current reality well

The problem before Forge Manager

The original ECU was dated and built for gasoline only, which is a poor fit for the Brazilian reality of fuel containing roughly 27% ethanol. At the same time, the other tuning software was not very helpful: it was hard to find things, the workflow was unclear, and the Pro-level features were priced beyond what made sense for the project.

How Forge Manager helped

With Forge Manager, it became possible to get into the product without initial installation friction, try more features, and use AI-assisted analysis to review logs. Instead of needing deep professional tuning knowledge from the start, the workflow made it possible to submit a log and get insights on what to improve in order to make the tune smoother and easier to understand.

The result so far

The biggest gain was not “magic automation.” It was accessibility. Tuning became less intimidating, the adjustment path became clearer, and the barrier to entry dropped significantly for an advanced user who is serious about the hobby but not a professional tuner.

The first Forge Manager videos are still in production

Instead of offering 1:1 demos, we will publish short videos showing the portal workflow, datalog review, and what changes for rusEFI users who currently work across fragmented tools.
